Â Sons In Retirement, Inc (SIR) is a Public Benefit Non Profit Corporation whoseÂ objectiveÂ is to assist retired men in northern California to maintain old friendships, form new ones and avoid the boredom of retirement. The SIR organization was Incorporated in 1959 andÂ now has about 19,000 members in 150 branches. There is no espousal of political, religious, Â fraternal organizations, or the like, at any time. Branch 8, Mount Diablo, was chartered in 1965. Â We have about 290 members andÂ meet on the second Monday of the month for luncheon at the Concord Hilton Hotel, 1970 Diamond Boulevard, ConcordÂ (click on the MOVE INFO menu above for more information). Â At the luncheons we have invited speakers who present a wide range of subjects. In the past year the topics have ranged from the Science of Beer, developing a Local Arts Center, to a review of Calâ€™s football team! Every year we have two Ladies Day Luncheons. The first is in June, the second one in December. Ladies are also invited to a number of our activities, please check with the Activity Chair to see if that is appropriate. Sons in Retirement-Mt. Diablo SIR Branch 8-2009 2009 was an eventful year for our Branch 8. Our 32 activities received more than 80% participation from members. Trips to Ireland and San Francisco, golf at home and many great nearby courses, fishing in the ocean, bay, Mexico, Sierras, a day at the horse races at Golden Gate Fields, exploring unique locations in the Bay Area, reading and discussing books , wine tasting of expensive and everyday wines, bocce ball, bowling, pool, hiking and walking the hills and trails in the Bay area, bridge and poker, dining out at different restaurants, learning about astronomy, computers and technology, cooking, investing, photography, singing, seeing plays and writing life stories kept our membership busy during the year. All made possible by our corps of volunteers who gave generously of their time and talent to make our activities interesting and worthy of the high level of participation In retrospect, the Branch has always been an active one. It was first sponsored by the East Bay Branch 2 in 1964, and then chartered and incorporated in 1965. Meetings were held at the Boundary Oak Restaurant until 1979 when they were moved to the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge.â€¦
How to join Branch 8
To become a member of Branch 8 you need to have a sponsor and regularly attend the monthly luncheon meetings. If you donâ€™t know a Sir already, we will introduce you to a potential sponsor and he will guide you through the simple process. To obtain an application form click the link below and print both pages of the application form.Â After completing the form sign and mail to: Bill Barnard SIR Branch 8 Membership Secretary 3214 Tamworth Ct. Walnut Creek , CA. 94598 After receiving your application, a Branch 8 member who will become your sponsor, will contact you to arrange for you to attend a luncheon meeting. Hilton feedback and Actions taken
Well, we made it! And with a record attendance of 262 at the first luncheon in our new venue. Â A few late comers were put-off by the sight of so many members, and some could not see an empty seat. My apologies to anyone who was unable to find a seat and felt they had to leave. We did find seats for a couple of late comers by asking members to indicate empty places at their tables. If you have this problem in a future meeting please check in with the head table and weâ€™ll find you a seat. We plan to fix problems as they arise, so please keep your comments flowing.Â After the luncheon on Monday,Â Bill Peterson and I met with the Catering Sales Manger Â to present our initial evaluation. We discussed some changes and improvements that could be made quickly. There were a number of emails sent to the BEC after the luncheon, and I am pleased to report that many of the problems they reported had already been taken up with the Hilton staff. The concerns we had not identified were addressed by Bill on Tuesday in a phone call to the Hilton. The list belowâ€¦
Lunch drawing for bringing guests
Â FREE LUNCH DRAWING FOR BRINGING GUESTS As an incentive to bring in new candidates for membership, a drawing for a free lunch will be held in January and in July for members who bring guests to meetings during the previous six months.Â You can use the SIR Cards handed out at the February Luncheon to invite guests or pick up some cards at the check-in table in March. For each new guest sponsored during the six month period, a member will have an entry in the drawing.Â Bring one new guest, have one chance.Â Bring 3 new guests, have 3 chances!Â And for your efforts, you do not have to be present to win. Â
